Garmin Launches $1,100 Gradient Simulator for Indoor Cycling

Tacx Alpine adds physical elevation changes to NEO trainer ecosystem with 25% grade simulation

Garmin just launched Tacx Alpine, a gradient simulator that physically tilts cyclists during indoor rides to match virtual terrain. The $1,100 device works exclusively with Tacx NEO 2T and 3M smart trainers, recreating climbs up to 25% grade and descents down to negative 10%.

The Alpine represents Garmin's push into premium indoor cycling accessories as the market matures beyond basic trainers. Indoor cycling hardware sales exploded during pandemic lockdowns but have since plateaued, forcing manufacturers to innovate with higher-margin add-ons that enhance the experience rather than just provide basic functionality.

The device includes dynamic steering through a rotating handlebar mount and integrates with Garmin's Tacx Training App for virtual group rides and immersive route videos. Susan Lyman, Garmin's Vice President of Consumer Sales and Marketing, positions it as creating an "ultimate indoor cycling experience unlike any other."

The timing targets serious cyclists preparing for outdoor season and those seeking year-round training solutions. At $1,100, Alpine sits well above entry-level smart trainers but below complete bike fitting systems, targeting enthusiasts willing to invest in premium home gym setups. The exclusive compatibility with NEO trainers creates a compelling ecosystem play for Garmin's existing high-end customer base.
